Snowmobile Safety Course

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office will be hosting Snowmobile Safety Education classes at the Michael J. Sullivan Judicial Center in Woodstock. After successfully completing the requirements prescribed by the State of Illinois and the Department of Natural Resources, attendees will receive a State of Illinois Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate. The McHenry County Sheriff's promotes safe operations of snowmobile by education and enforcement throughout the winter season.

**********CANCELLED 2020-2021 SEASON**********

In coordination with IDNR and our efforts to keep the trails safer, student behavior is assessed during class. If we feel a student does not display a sense of responsibility and maturity, regardless if they complete the class and pass the test, they will be denied their IDNR Safety Certificate. Notification will be made to the IDNR Volunteer Services Regional Coordinator upon the completion of class.

The program is primarily designed to train young people between the ages of 12 and 16. The educational material is based on a sixth-grade reading level. Students under the age of 11 may not participate in the exam to receive certification.

Students between the ages of 11-12 years old will receive their certificate upon their 12th birthday.

Who should sign-up:

  • Persons at least 12 and less than 16 years of age who do not yet possess a Driver's License.

  • Persons who have had their State Driver's License revoked or suspended and wish to ride the trails or cross the roadways.

  • Anyone under the age of 27 who plans on snowmobiling in Wisconsin. (Safety Certificate Required)

  • All states and provinces that have mandatory education requirements will accept the Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency. Likewise, Illinois will accept certifications that are issued by other states and provinces. (This is known as "reciprocity.")
