Press Release- Warrant Telephone Scam September 26, 2019

9/27/2019 12:00:00 AM

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office was notified of a telephone scam being used against the public in which someone posing as a "warrant officer" from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office attempts to obtain payment over the telephone.

Recently, a victim received a call identified as originating from 815-338-2144 by caller ID.  The caller claimed they were from the Sheriff's Office and told the homeowner that he had a warrant for his arrest for theft. The homeowner stated a third party joined the telephone conversation and demanded payment using a debit or credit card.

The 815-338-2144 number is in fact a number associated with the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, but new technology allows scammers to manipulate systems so they can program what telephone number they want to appear on a caller ID.  It is not the practice of Sheriff's Office employees to contact persons by telephone and ask for payment.  If you believe there might be a warrant for your arrest, please contact our Warrant Division at 815-334-5124.

This is a scam being perpetrated by very sophisticated criminal organizations and are nearly impossible to track.  We encourage the public to not provide any payment over the telephone.  If you receive such a call, we suggest you immediately hang-up and notify your local Police Department to report the incident.
