Press Release- Sheriff’s Office Advises Residents to Lock Their Vehicles

9/27/2018 12:00:00 AM

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to remove the keys from their vehicles and lock their car doors due to a recent rash of burglaries to vehicles and thefts of vehicles.

In the last few months the Sheriff's Office has taken numerous reports throughout the county of burglaries to motor vehicles.  In almost every incident the owners left the vehicles unlocked and with valuables inside.

In the last week the Sheriff's Office has received reports of stolen vehicles.  All of these vehicles were unlocked with the keys either in the vehicle or located inside an unlocked garage.

Residents are urged to take a proactive approach and not leave their property undefended.  In addition to locking cars and removing valuables, other safety measures include closing/locking garage doors; installing motion-sensitive lights which illuminate parking areas; reporting any suspicious incidents and/or people to law enforcement; taking photos of valuable items, including serial numbers; and seeing that security cameras they have are in good working order and the lenses free of debris

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office encourages anyone with information regarding criminal activities to contact either the McHenry County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762-STOP (7867), The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Tip Line at (815) 338-2144, or the tip line email address; Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.00 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the offender(s).
